About Print on Demand

Our model of independent publishing

Modern publishing, without the barriers.

Print-on-demand is a publishing model in which copies of a book are printed only when an order is placed — whether that’s one copy or a thousand. There are no large upfront print runs, no warehousing costs, and no risk of unsold stock. The quality of print and binding is indistinguishable from books produced through traditional publishing.

For authors who don’t need or want a commercial print run of tens of thousands of copies, print-on-demand has fundamentally changed what’s possible.

Why it matters for independent authors

Traditional publishing has always favoured books with mass-market potential. Publishers invest heavily in print runs and need guaranteed returns — which means most authors, however talented or knowledgeable, never get past the gatekeepers.

Print-on-demand removes that barrier entirely. If you have something worthwhile to say – something educational, something personal, something your community needs – you can now publish it professionally, at a fraction of the cost, and make it available to readers worldwide.

How we distribute your book

At Ashwood House Publishing, we distribute through Ingram Lightning Source, the same distribution infrastructure used by major commercial publishers. This means your book is available to order through:

  • Amazon (UK, US, and international)
  • High street bookshops and independent retailers, via Ingram’s global network
  • Online retailers worldwide
  • Direct order through your own website

Your book won’t typically sit on a physical bookshop shelf — that remains the territory of mass-market titles – but any bookshop can order it, and any reader anywhere in the world can buy it online.

Who is print-on-demand for?

Authors drawn to this model are rarely motivated by the idea of bestseller lists. They are people who have something meaningful to contribute – a body of knowledge, a personal story, a resource for their community – and who want to see it published properly, with professional presentation and real credibility.

The satisfaction of holding a finished, professionally produced book – and knowing it is available to anyone who wants it – is something no sales figure can fully capture.
